As we’ve spoken about in past podcast episodes, celebrities are an odd bird on TikTok. At least so far, TikTok prides itself on being a clean slate where anyone can become famous on merit alone.
Most celebrities that join TikTok don’t quite “get it.” As we’ve spoke about on many episodes, there’s an element to TikTok that’s almost like an inside joke. And if you don’t get it, you just don’t get it.
So much of the viral content on TikTok is almost anti-content. It’s absurd and irrational, and very much out of the mainstream. It makes sense that celebrities wouldn’t be in on the joke—they are the mainstream.
The celebrities that have had the most success on TikTok are using the medium as it’s intended, rather than treating it like Instagram. TikTok is not glossy or pretty. It’s weird and dark and wonderful.
Check out Gordon Ramsey for a good example of TikTok celebrity done right. He uses the Duet feature to trash TikTok cooks in his own unique way.
Most other celebrities are posting content that’s a little too produced for TikTok. They’re just not used to it yet. Either they’ll fall in love with the TikTok way and start posting more authentic content. Or they’ll just stick to Instagram.
We’ll be following along as more celebrities join the platform.
