TikTok Trends: May 2021
Dena and Melissa start the show discussing ads on TikTok, mentioning ads from Splice, TurboTax, and a male coverup product that Dena keeps seeing.
Then, they discuss song trends from @laney.wy “I hate everyone…but mainly you,” where creators cut to something they deeply despise with a pretty acoustic song in the background.
“Whole Lotta Money” from Bia has a cool backstory. It debuted on the Oxygen reality show Sisterhood of Hip Hop and was used by Lil Huddy.
“Bury a Friend” from Billie Eilish started with Charli D’Amelio making a video where she bends backwards during a particularly creepy sounding effect in the song. Now, there’s a trend where people take their phone and it move it up above their heads, into their hair, and then cut and do a costume or makeup change, and bring the phone back down to reveal their new look.
Doja Cat makes fun of a straight TikToker (@itsnottreylander) and the crowd goes wild.
We explain a TikTok workout trend, sampling a video from @toriious. It’s sort of like a barre hip thruster workout, but way more specific.
We talk about cooking eggs in pesto as the latest food trend on TikTok.
Another new trend involves pouring water on something small then editing the video to make it look like the water made it bigger, one of our favorite videos comes from @ox_zung.
A new viral video sensation uses stitch and duet to add to a video by @marcus.dipaola “introducing you to my girlfriend.” People put together a video collage of a hostage situation with the hashtag #freebrittany.
We explain the video by @maggiemaxeyy showing Southern girls saying where they are going to college.
And finally, we highlight our favorite creator this week: @akorzen, “The Cranky New Yorker.” She welcomes you into her home, pouring water or arranging flowers, while sharing some observational humor.
