What is TikTok?
TikTok is a social app where anyone can upload and watch short videos. The videos are all under 60 seconds. The platform offers many editing options to alter audio and visual components. Its “For You Page” curates videos specific to your tastes.
The platform was predominately popular with teenagers, but gained an older user base during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, users of all ages are familiar with the platform.
Most 25+ year-olds still hesitate to actually download the platform – no matter how many news articles they read, the question still arises: “What is TikTok?”
You can think of it in relation to other popular social networks, like Facebook and Instagram. TikTok fosters a community where people can interact, watch, listen, and learn from each other.
The biggest difference between TikTok and other social platforms is that you don’t need to follow anyone to still get a “feed” (called the “For You Page”). Instead of following friends or celebrities, TikTok shows you an endless amount of content from random people.
Similar to Facebook and Instagram, you don’t have to create your own videos to be on TikTok—just like you can have a blank Instagram or empty Facebook page, still follow creators, and view others’ content.
